Thoughts About Being Open.... |

8/9/2009Some of us are and some of us aren't "out". This subject can actually be a bit touchy, as even in this day and age, myths and misconceptions about Witchcraft still exist.
However, Witchcraft too has still survived. Long before Judaisim and Christianity people practiced this way..it was survival! It is not for the faint of heart, nor the sensationalist. I guess the real dilemna here is, it is hard to be taken seriously.."you're a Witch? No way there is no such thing"..or "you are going to burn in Hell". It's a tough call on how to deal with those who have a closed mind set such as this. But we have to deal with it eventually, even if in our own subtle way.
When I first meet someone I never approach them with any information about my religion. Why should I? Nor do I expect that they will greet me with their path. However, because I wear a pentacle, and it is not the usual cross, or Star of David, sometimes I get that question.."what is that pendant?" My answer is to the point. It is a meaningful symbol to me. Rarely do I walk around in ritual attire in public...but if I should...that is my right. I usually will respond to polite questions, but, if people are rude, I give them nothing negative to say as I usually end the encounter and simply walk away. You can't please all of the people all of the time..lol.
Now family is another story. Alot depends on how open they are, and how well you present yourself regarding your belief. If you show up at the front door looking like someone who is screaming out LOOK at me....they may be taken aback....Most mundane people do not understand our love of silver rings and ornate amulets and talismans...lol. If you wear a hub cap for a pentacle, they are apt to think that for sure Satan has lured you on the path to hell! If you show up adorned with even your best ritual attire..they just might not get it! So, again touchy, and all in how you present yourself, and even more than that, your actions. Hopefully, there is a time when you can feel comfortable enough to share your belief and way of life. It is always a wonderful thing when family discovers what we are really all about and begins to comprehend that we really have more similarities than differences! And especially cool is when they accept the fact that...we don't have a devil...they do! Lol
The workplace is really just that. There are 2 topics that can turn a workplace into a battlefield. Religion and politics. Unless your boss and co-workers are open minded...don't go there, no need.
Now for the die hard battle axes such as myself..lol. It is what it is. I am prepared to take the consequences of my actions, and practice the courage of my convictions when it comes to my religion. It is my right! I live in America. This place was founded because of those who came here seeking freedom of religion! It is in the constitution...and Witchcraft is a religion. It is recognized now among the world's religions. Actually it is the foundation of most of the worlds religions. I am comfortable with who I am, as to being open and out and about. I really have not had much of a struggle with those who are skeptical. I do not choose to recruit them to believe in my way nor do I choose to impress them. It is what it is and I am who I am. I choose to do my work and try to let my actions define me. Anybody can talk a good talk..the important thing is to walk and talk in sync. I am a mother and a grandmother...if my children want to follow this path, then it is up to myself and all of us for the sake of our children to stand up for what we believe in. I wish no one to define me. If I don't believe in myself, no one else will. My temple is everywhere and within. I need no fancy place of worship. The Earth, Sea and Sky are my church. Humanity, animals, and nature are my concern and regard. My spiritual path enables me to savor this life as all 8 sabbats are true celebrations of the great mysteries. It is what it is....
It is important to stand up and speak up for what you believe in. For what is your right, for what makes you wholesome and at peace. The Charge of The Goddess says "let no one stop you, nor turn you aside". Truer words were never better spoken. By our actions and good deeds we set an example. By the courage of our convictions, we stand firm in our beliefs, and knowing what is in our heart allows us the passion and desire to live a magickal life!
Blessings,
Tia
